About Marisa Helms

Freelance writer and producer

Helms started in public radio with KQED’s California Report in 1996.  After a year-long stint in Detroit reporting for WDET in 1998, Helms landed at Minnesota Public Radio where she worked for 81/2 years.

In addition to reporting, Helms has been a guest host for the nationally syndicated technology show “Future Tense.”

Freelance work includes stories for NPR, The World, Marketplace and the BBC.

Helms currently writes for Forum Communications’ Minnesota Capitol Bureau, and for MinnPost.com. She  also produces radio interviews for various projects.

In 1998, Helms reported on a 10-day humanitarian aid mission to Iraq. Her radio series about the trip won a 1998 Associated Press award for news documentary.

Public Radio reporter/producer since 1996

I am a dedicated journalist with a unique blend of talents.

I have degrees in art, film and cultural studies, and an education in world travel with a whole lot of local politics and public affairs thrown in.

I have a passion for writing and news, with a strong ear for what makes great radio.

I'm forever drawn to the challenges of my profession. I am very proud to be a journalist, radio producer, print reporter, MinnPoster, photographer, headline writer... in other words, a "multi-platform synergistic content provider," as an erstwhile employer put it once. :-)
